But Lois Greiner feels that there's another side to North County residents. |

Greiner has loved to decorate in this romantic yet welcoming style for years and thought the area lacked a store to match her tastes.
"I felt the store would be a way to go to shows, buy the things that I like and see other people enjoy them," she said.
And enjoy them they do. Women, in particular, have been delighted to find a place where they can feather their nests in a cozy, feminine style. The store carries furniture, art, lamps, accessories and gifts. And for a further prettiness fix, there's a section dedicated to fairies and angels.
Furnishings are new, but they have an antique look. There are pieces that are charming and cottage-style, while a line of French Country furnishings is a bit more refined and romantic. Then there are simple, casual pieces in country pine.
Even the store's selection of decorator fabrics has a romantic bent. Cottage-style fabrics come in patterns such as florals and plaids. Customers can purchase these by the yard or have the store reupholster a piece. The store also carries Heritage Lace, essential for vintage curtains or accents.
For those not handy with a sewing machine, Splendid Things sells country-style quilts, throw pillows and pillow shams.
Although the younger set is rumored to lean toward the sleek and contemporary, Greiner feels that the North County's rural roots means cozy cottage and country decor will never go out of style.
"Our customers aren't just people in their fifties. People of all ages have found us," she said.
Greiner admits that women are more apt to appreciate the wares. But her husband, Larry, is somewhat of a convert. "He's very tolerant," she said. She has learned to moderate the feminine touches in her own home. But as for the store, Greiner is grateful to finally have a place that's as pretty and feminine as her heart desires.
Decorating tips from Lois Greiner
Quilts are versatile.
Quilts aren't just for country or cottage spaces. If you have a more contemporary home, opt for a monochromatic quilt. One popular design at Splendid Things pairs black fabric with embroidery and would work well in a contemporary space.
Add a touch of lace.
White lace blowing in the wind is the picture of vintage decor. If lace curtains aren't your thing, you can add a vintage touch with a lace runner or table topper.
Learn the art of compromise.
If you love a soft feminine look, but your mate doesn't (or vice versa), it's possible to compromise. If you use floral fabrics, select ones in warmer colors rather than pastels. If you decorate in softer colors, allow your mate to select art that has a more masculine or contemporary feel. Or limit florals and frills to small items such as sofa pillows and tablecloths.
Splendid Things is located at 1309 Park St., Paso Robles, 237-2272.
